Fish Farming Service Vessel BAKKANES arriving at Fairlie Quay (Firth of Clyde, Scotland)

Arrived fromUllapool (North-West Scotland) and Loch Gilp (off Lochgilphead, Loch Fyne, Scotland)Port of RegistryGlyvrar (Faroe Islands)
Sailing forFairlie Quay (Firth of Clyde, Scotland)

09:22   BAKKANES had left the fish farm at Loch Gilp (in Loch Fyne, Scotland) and, at 9.5 knots, was passing Tarbert (Kintyre) on passage to Fairlie Quay (Firth of Clyde)

09:51   Was passing Inchmarnock Island (off Isle of Bute)

10:49   Now turning at the Cumbrae Heads and making for Fairlie.   But instead of rounding Little Cumbrae island and entering the Hunterston Channel she made for "The Tan"  (= the narrow and shallow channel which separates the Islands of Great Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae)

10:56   Astonishingly entering "The Tan" channel.   Residents of Millport must have almost choked on their elevenses mid-morning cup of tea to see this large and imposing vessel in this small channel.

It is not known if any Millportians were injured or spilled their tea during the BAKKANES's passage.

"The Tan" was often used in 1950s and 1960s by the Clyde excursion steamers (whose Masters were all accredited Clyde Pilots with Exemption Certificates) on their summer pleasure cruises, and maybe nowadays by the paddle steamer WAVERLEY, but certainly not now by any ocean-going commercial vessel.

11:01   Leaving "The Tan" and now entering the Hunterston Channel

11:11   In Largs Channel

11:15   Approaching Fairlie Quay

11:17   Arriving at Fairlie Quay (Firth of Clyde, Scotland)
